J.D. Buckman, Jr. (1911-1995)
Mr. Buckman was born on March 13, 1911, the son of Carletta Hatzell Buckman and J. D. Buckman, Sr.
He graduated from Shepherdsville High School in 1931, and the Jefferson School of Law, Louisville, Kentucky, in 1936. In 1936 he was admitted to practice law which began in Shepherdsville.
During the war, Mr. Buckman served in the army, in the Judge Advocate Branch from 1942 to 1944.
Being active in politics, he was elected clerk of the Bullitt Circuit Court in 1933; House of Representatives, 1949-1951; Attorney General of Kentucky 1952-1956; House of Representatives 1960 – 1962; State Senate, 12th Senatorial District, 1962-1966; State Senate, 14th Senatorial District, 1966-1970.
In addition, he has served as State President of the Young Democrats of Kentucky 1950; Senate Democratic Caucus Chairman 1962; Senate Democratic majority Leader 1966 and Bullitt County Democratic Chairman.
Active in civic and religious organizations he was a member of First Baptist Church, Shepherdsville; Masonic Lodge; American Legion; Disable Veterans; Bullitt County Farm Bureau; Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity; Kentucky state Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Because of his contribution to his county and his state, main street in Shepherdsville was renamed Buckman Street.
